Charles Simmons sent the following e-mail and photos. VERY intriguing in such a time as this!!!
To My Dear Friends,
This picture of John McCain brought back some fond memories.
I’ve seen this picture many times, but only recently did I realize what airplane it was.
(John McCain is bottom right)
This is the same airplane I flew in the Navy Training Command. It is the T2A Buckeye. John was in training at NAAS Meridian and I would be willing to bet that this was his last flight at Meridian. It typically was a four-plane formation flight and they would take a picture of the students after completion of this graduating flight. John and I followed the same training track in the Navy although he was about four years ahead of me.
Here’s mine!
(Charles is far right)
Just think, I could be running for President!

Hey Charles, you can't run this time but who knows, as you say you are 4 years behind John !
I don't know why you thought you needed to put the highlight around your picture as surely everyone remembers you. As I look at the pics on the blog you have not changed so much over the years other than the grey and the posture of a successful man firmly in control of his beliefs and actions. Keep up the good work !
Thanks for the info and the pics, blessed be our Service men and women.

Charles please remind me at the 50th to ask to be your campaign manager. That's if there is anything left to run for...

You're on, John! That is if I can remember whatever it is you're talking about!

Charles,
I lived down the street from you on Mossrose in Pecan Park. I played trombone in the band at Deady and Milby and challenged you once for first position but never could beat you. I always thought you'd be in an orchestra; not in the Navy. Incidentally, I ended up flying P-3s for the NOAA hurricane hunters out of Miami for 9 years. Seems as though living on Mossrose brought out the flight officer in us. It must have had something to do with flying kites in our yards back then.

Charles Simmons & Don Hannsz being flung off carriers and Bill Adams deliberately flying into Hurricanes, WHEW! That's not fun flying in my book-think I'll stick to motorcycles...

If any have the opportunity to read about HISD (editorial page) in Hou Chron and the food problem (junk vs nutrious food)you will discover 80% of all HISD students are on a free or reduced lunch--at Milby the percentage is even higher--and the more students who require free lunches--the school gets more money for that student--at last visit--a Pizza place across from Milby serves large $5.00 cheese and peporoni pizzas-also-Rices'a cafe across from Milby serves fried chicken-burgers-Chinese food--and other items--fairly cheap--and Burger King is a block away-- while students are not supposed to be allowed off campus--almost half of the free lunch crowd sneaks over to the pizza place or rices' for lunch or one student or a teacher go for many--and bring back lunch--what happens to the lunch money not spent-it returns to the school--so the problem is magnified--students don't like the nutritious lunches so they spend their dollars for a cheap alternative--not picking on Milby as the same thing goes on in all HISD schools and other districts--
plus to be fair--the food is pre-prepared for lunch by the ARA commissary--and the Milby staff heats and serves--in this situation we might do the same thing--cross the street for better tasting food though much less nutritious--Also-every HISD school serves a free breakfast to every student--maybe the Chronicle should take a look at the breakfast sandwiches half eaten and strewn over the campus--but that's another story.

If you have not realized it--Milby has been relegated to 4A after being 5A since 5A was established...Take note--Chavez remains 5A (remember it is about two miles away from Milby on the corner of Old Galveston Rd and Howard Drive--where the new Milby should have been-- Next week I will explain how Milby got into this reduced market. The truth will not sit well with you.

Wally - Your note on the free/reduced lunch program is right on target and is applicable to schools across the great 50. I have taken surveys in the Knoxville ISD where students at all levels receive free breakfast and lunch. Many trash the food into the garbage except for sugar products and then proceed to islands in the cafeteria where the school sales junk food to the students. Far cry from paying five cents for milk and another nickle for a bowl of soup at lunch.
