"German Pancakes" - Thurburn's Specialty!

"German Pancakes" - Thurburn's Specialty!

Before Christmas, Thurburn Barker sent a greeting with this happy news: "Our daughter, Janet, and her family from Pennsylvania are with us in Hendersonville for Christmas. Our other daughter, Heather, and her husband live in Hendersonville; so, our immediate family will be together for Christmas for the first time in over a decade.

I encouraged him to be sure to send some photos for the blog. After Christmas, Thurburn did so, with this explanation: "I didn't take an avalanche of photos this year. Robert, my son-in-law, took most of the photos. Unfortunately, I forgot to download them into my computer before they left. I'll be sure to get a copy of them when we make a trip up to New Hope, PA, later this month. However, of the few photos that I did take, I've included 3 or 4 with this email."

He sent this photo, with the following explanation: "The German Pancakes photo shows four baked pancakes (my specialty). This batch was made from 8-eggs, 1/2 cup of flour (it's better to use a little bit of Gluten flour to stiffen the upright walls after baking), 1/2 cup milk; baked for 12-15 minutes at 450-degrees. After baking, they are filled with steamed apples slices followed by a bit of lemon juice, maple syrup, cinnamon and dusted with powered sugar. Yummy. A few months ago, I taught Landon how to make these. Now this is his specialty and he enjoys making these for his family and friends.

The Village Inn Pancake House used to have these on their menu in the Boulder and Denver area. However, the Village Inn dropped this item from their menu sometime in the 70's; I suppose that's because it took 20-minutes to prepare and was a bit more complex in presentation."

Karla's note: Aren't these beautiful!?!?!? YUM!!! This is also one of Ed's specialties - although we call them Dutch Baby Pancakes. Birds of a feather!!!

Thurbrun included this photo as well, with this comment: "Landon, Janet, and Caitlin displaying one of their special talents. One of Cathie's small quilts can be seen in the background (see next photo). The two horse prints, by Woody Crumbo, were purchased at the Southern Ute Indian Reservation near Durango, CO, in 1970."

Since I am a quilt lover, I had to isolate the glimpse of one of Cathie Barker's quilts mentioned in the previous photo caption. I would love to see more - more of this one and more of others. KD

"The Critique" - Thurburn's Girls at Work

"The Critique" - Thurburn's Girls at Work

“The Critique” shows (L-R) Cathie, Heather (youngest daughter), Janet (oldest daughter) and our granddaughter Caitlin. The women are critiquing some of Caitlin's drawings. Caitlin is quite creative as an artist. During this visit, Caitlin constructed her own Christmas cards. Each card is different and each has a fold-out center. An example is one with a decorated Christmas tree with a toy railroad train that rings the base of the tree and gift boxes with bows adorning the inside and outside faces of the card. (You're right. I'll have to take a picture)."

OK, Thurburn, we'll look forward to more photos - of the cards Caitlin designed as well as of your gathering at Christmas. Thanks for this glimpse into your fascinating world! Karla

"John and I went to the Atlantic coast side of Florida to be with his daughter and her husband and sons for four days. Didn't take a single picture of our Thanksgiving dinner crowd. Go figure. But it was all GREAT!

The boys went fishing and had some luck (ha, ha)." Glenda Burns Minniece

Blogmeister's Note - Thanksgiving Feast Fact: the pilgrims and Indians had an abundance of fish at their feast. Good thing they weren't depending on THIS catch!!! KD

(Ba) - Ray and Rodney, Thanksgiving 2008

Ray Prichard sent this lovely photo, along with the following message:

"This is a picture of Pat and me with Rodney and Sandra Preuit on Thanksgiving Day. Pat and I joined the entire Preuit family at the home of one of his twin girls, Karen. She had 35 people including her four Preuit siblings and their spouses plus her husband's extended family over for Thanksgiving dinner.

A good time was had by all and nobody overate. OK, maybe a few of the other people overate, but I did not. OK, I did overeat but not by a whole lot. OK, you dragged it out of me, I stuffed myself to the point of embarrassment." (N Ray)

(Oa) Old House in Holly, Michigan

John Echoff sent this report about his Christmas holiday with Linn’s family in Michigan. He also sent these beautiful snow scenes. The message begins:

“Karla, I just wanted to touch base and let you know what has transpired during the holidays. We left here on Friday, before Christmas heading for Linn's family home in Holly, Michigan. Arrived there Saturday afternoon, in between two snowstorms. On Sunday morning we had 2 foot of snow and the temp was 11 degrees! Linn's mother has been in very bad health and last spring she advised that she probably would not be here for Christmas. In October she was hospitalized in critical condition for a couple of weeks and upon returning home one of Linn's sisters moved in as a caretaker. The sister is an amateur photographer and has recently won a prize from a local paper for some of her photo's, which included landscapes, sunsets, and animals. (Continued with next photo)

(John Echoff's message, continued from previous photo)

Almost like clockwork every morning, first the deer would arrive in the back yard looking for a handout, then the turkeys and pheasants. Now for someone like me to just watch all that food on the hoof and not take a shot was almost too much to bear! But I restrained myself and didn't shoot any of the "pets".

(Oc) Pheasant in Yard

John Echoff's message continues: There were at least 5 deer (at one time there were 27) in the yard each morning, the turkey numbered no less than 15 and one time there were 33 in the yard. Only two pheasants, squirrels of several type, red, black, and fox squirrels were everywhere. We took lots of pictures and I will forward them, but I have to transfer them first. (continued with next photo)

Christmas day was nice, all sorts of friends and relatives around, Linn's mom really enjoyed seeing everyone. Sadly Linn's mother passed away on Monday, Dec.29th while we were with her at the house, she quietly slipped into God's arms, while Linn and two of her sisters stood by, two of the brothers also arrived in time to say their goodbyes. We were all distressed and in shock, although it was expected, no one was ready for it to occur when it did. We had to stay until Jan 2nd, helping with legal matters, but left as soon as that was complete. We drove straight home, choosing not to stop and arrived on Saturday. Since then we have been trying to catch up on things here.

"New toy!!! We picked this up today, it was on sale and Linn just couldn't resist having a tractor with the front end loader and back hoe. Just look at the grin on her face..."
