Posted by Karla Lofgren Davis, based on the Comments of Beverly Frankinson Allison - August 26, 2007
Beverly Frankinson Allison just cracks me up. I am enjoying her comments (and her style) immensely, and today there were three comments suggesting a variety of ideas for a POST. They were all excellent, so I will take the contents from the three comments and try to pull them together into one cohesive idea. Here goes…
Beverly wrote: “Idea. You have so many ‘blog’ sites on here [KD - I call them POSTS], why not put a ‘helpful’ one where everyone that would like could lists things. Like I found out that in the first 6 months of taking out Medicare they will pay for all exams, such as the dreadful colon thing, vision (cataracts), heart tests, blood work, etc.
And we could share ideas to take full advantage of senior (just think of what a privilege it was to be a ‘senior’ in high school and college) discounts and other things that help us ‘bond together’ in the here and now. Maybe in our particular skills we can offer ‘professional’, or rather, ‘alumni' discounts. Like for the reunion I would give a discount for a band. I would give discounts to any of your families for weddings, parties, etc. Just go to my website [link in right sidebar]. Whatcha think?
Also another thought. How about a site for alumni ‘singles’? By the way, the Galveston Symphony has a season and I can get a certain amount of ‘comps’ if told in time. Dates: Sept 30, Nov 4, Feb 3, March 16, and April 20.”
Karla here, once again, affirming Beverly’s great ideas and wishing I lived in the Houston/Galveston area so I could take advantage of those concerts. I hope some of you will get a group together and go. Sounds like fun to me.
So, consider this the Official Message Board for Seniors and Singles. Post your good ideas and let’s get busy helping each other out and bonding ~ as Beverly suggested!!!

Well all you Buffalos, we are viewing a change in America . Starting in 1960 we all hit the trails of Life and now here we are watching the Wall Sreet parade of our money value going down down down and today like to have been in the state of mind of our grandparents.
I like sayings and for a brief moment sayings bring a smile, fullness of heart, uplifting moment.
I would like to read of some of these sayings from y'all. I will start off by sending one today.
From an article on A Guide To A Happy Life, "No one will get out of this world alive. Resolve therefore to maintain a reasonable sense of values".

Linda, et.al,
Just know that this is a really great opportunity to buy. And remember Chicken Little. The sky isn't really falling. Sheila

This is an intriguing idea, Linda - FAVORITE SAYINGS. I hope this catches on as I love sayings too. I'd love to hear what favorites others have collected through the years.
Of course, I have to say here that Biblical scripture is my #1 source of "words to live by", and I quote verses often. But next to that, I frequently find myself using folksy sayings in my "self-talk" and as I counsel with others.
Many of my favorite sayings trace back to Ed's mother - she was always repeating short, pithy words of wisdom. I use this one a lot in my job and in my personal life: "Least said is easiest mended". It's true, isn't it? But my tongue surely does get sore as I chew on it to stifle my witty comebacks that are better left unsaid.
My current favorite is a quote from a book that Laura McNeil Burns contributed recently on the "Speaking of Books" post: "Look at you, and after a lifetime of trying." That surely does apply in my life, and to about every good intention and self improvement project I have ever tried. And yet I have not given up hope that some day I WILL get my life in order!!! (Yes, I'm running out of time!)
Let's hear YOUR favorite sayings, your treasured words to live by. Karla

Thanks, Beverly, for the idea about seniors money saving tips. One little tip: Tuesday's at Ross Dress for Less is senior's discount day. That's a small tip but - a penny saved is a penny earned. :)

I have been doing some recent research to reduce the cost of medications, and I would like to share what I have learned:
1. All of us should be vaccinated for Herpes Zoster, the virus causing Chicken Pox and Shingles. Doctors charge over $300, but we got ours at the Texas Dept. of Health clinic in Navasota for $15. They also administered Tetinus vaccine at the same time at no extra charge.
2. For those of us who might be experiencing Male Menopause, the hormone treatments, and other related pharmaceutcal products are very expensive. I have found some alternative sources that I can share.
Email me at [email protected] and I will send details.

Larry Smith sent this link to be posted on the blog, concerned that there are still a lot of tainted products on the shelves.
