Wally Sisk is currently the Journalism teacher and Publications Advisor at Milby High School. This is his 8th year on the staff after a 35 year career in the private sector. He will be hosting this column, adding new information that arises from time to time that he thinks former grads would enjoy knowing. Here's the first installment.

· This year Milby received 17 scholarships from the Houston Rodeo at $15 K each. Milby has received more than 150 scholarships from the Houston Rodeo over the years--way more than any other school in the Greater Houston area.
· Milby Baseball is tied with Lamar for third place in the playoffs. Milby and Lamar will go as there is a fourth playoff spot. If Milby beats Chavez (the new Austin--I am talking extreme rivalry) and Bellaire beats Lamar, Milby will get the third playoff spot. If both Milby and Lamar win or lose together--there will be a one game playoff (to be announced). We are awaiting details of time and field on Milby vs Chavez on 11th of May .
· Milby has gone to the playoffs every year for the past eight years, but has failed to get past the first round of playoffs. This could be the year. Wally (more to come)

Wally, thanks for the info. My brother payed football at Milby for 3 years. He was all-city, all-state, graduating in 1960 His name was Delbert "Butch" Walker. I understand his picture still hangs in the Milby gym and at Delmar Stadium in Houston.
Will be keeping up with the sports end of it. By the way, you are the only one, besides Richard, I could recognize. Good chating.

Hey Wally,
I didn't know you were back at Milby. I wonder how many of us went back to teach there. I taught Physical Science there right after I graduated from UH in '63.

How cool to hear from you, Sandra! You are absolutely my #1 role model from our school days - my ideal of THE high school beauty!!! And my dear old dad would always say - "beauty is only skin deep, it's what's on the inside that matters" - so I must mention you were the complete beauty - inside and out!
I am so glad you found our blog and hope that you will visit and contribute often. Check out the picture of a Kay Robinson piano recital group - here on the blog, in the Deady photo album - linked at http://milby1960.typepad.com/photos/premilby_class_photos_etc/robinson_piano_students_about_1955.html -

Karla,
I love the picture from Mrs. Robinson's piano class circa 1952. Note all the happy smiling faces of all the students but one. The guy in the back row with the look of fear on his face and ears that look like a 1955 Desoto with the doors open. That would be me.

Joe, that look of fear was all inside of you - I thought you looked as cute as could be!!! One of the cool dudes! No telling how many emotions we all hid beneath our bright shining faces, while thinking others had it all together!
Have you checked out this photo of the Deady cheerleaders lately?

Good to hear from you, Joe. I'd love to know where you are now and what you are doing, as well as the road you have traveled! Karla

Hi Joe,
Speaking of ears, I remember when I used to get called "dumbo" in elementary, my ears really were way out there. However, you were always the gentleman. One time you gave me your collection of over 100 comic books when I was sick with the mumps!! What a guy! Looking forward to catching up at the reunion. Judy Kennedy

I was called "Bugs Bunny" in elementary school - when big buck teeth came in after I lost my tiny baby teeth. My parents were so poor, but they made great sacrifices to have braces on my teeth at a time when very few did so.
They were right to think the teasing hurt me, and I am so grateful they took it seriously. I mean REALLY BIG BUCK TEETH!!! There were so few orthodontists at that time that Randy and I would ride a city bus to downtown Houston, then get a transfer to ride another bus to the South Main office of Dr. Cunningham... and back again.
I love connecting with you all!!! Karla

Here's a message from Boyce Honea, class of '59 (former basketball coach at Milby, now retired) with some Milby sports related information. [Karla]
Buffs,
In case you did not know Milby is 3 - 0 in district play. The Buffs defeated Lamar last nite 54-45, reversing a defeat in the JC tournament of 2 points by Lamar. The Lamar coach, a real jerk, pulled his team off the court with a minute in the game when he saw he was not going to win. I will be interested in seeing what kind of discipline the coach gets for "Quitting" when things are not going your way.
Coach Duffer (80) and his assistant, Sam Hines(88), are doing a great job coaching this year and look to be headed to the playoffs. Let's all support the Buffs by attending some games and joining the Milby Tip-Off Club. Barron Honea (80) and his lovely wife Darla have taken over the Tip-Off club so Coach Duffer can devote full time to coaching. If you have not joined the tip-off call please email Barron at [email protected] to join.
Also, let's all watch the Milby grad, Donald "Quickie" Driver (94), tomorrow when Green Bay plays Arizona in the NFL Playoffs. Quickie is the #1 all time Green Bay Packer receiver and a future "Hall of Fame" selection. He is #80 for Green Bay. Go Buffs! Boyce"Coach" Honea (59)

Sad about the Pack. We are big Green Bay fans here. My husband is a native of Wisconsin.
