In answer to my questions re the cuisine of the area, Carole wrote, "Right next to this monastery is a restaurant where we enjoy eating (seen in the last slide, # 43). I can't find the name, something like "Panjellajkn."

A typical meal here might include Shopska Salad (Large chunks of cucumbers and tomatoes, then Mozzarella cheese grated heavily over the top). Sometimes you'll get Feta cheese and onion slices with the cucumbers and tomatoes instead of mozzarella. However, there is no cheddar cheese to be found here. We must go to Greece and bring it back to Macedonia.

Shish-Ka-Bobs are good here with skewered chunks of pork, chicken, and beef with onions, tomatoes, peppers, etc. French fries are served with this and are different tasting - kind of buttery flavored, really good.

When you order water, you have to specify "gas” (carbonated-like) or “no gas” (still). And if you want ice, you have to ask and hope they understand and have it. Most people here do not use ice."
