For most of us, this age was pretty awkward as we were continually changing in every way. But it was an exciting time too, as we met and made new friends from the other elementary schools that fed into Deady. See if you recognize the Milby 1960 graduates among these smiling faces. Dave Williams sends this photo of Boy Scout Troop 556. The adult on the right is identified as Mr. Eckhart (Bobby's father?), and the man on the left is Dave's father, Noble Williams (who was a Chemistry teacher at Milby).
Billie Trombatore Young mentioned music lessons at Mrs. Robinson's in one of her comments. Randy and I were fortunate to take lessons from her as well. I am in the center of the photo - checked dress. Billie Jean is to the left of me (with her gorgeous, infectious smile). See also Buck Maughner, David Claridge, Joe Sunbarger, skip, Alan Robinson, and (I think) James Verlander on top row. I am sorry to say that if there are other Milby '60 kids here, I don't recognize them at the moment. Please chime in if you are here and I missed you. (Karla)
Now we are looking more like the ladies and gentleman we grew up to be! The beautiful Bille Jean Trombatore is easily recognizable on the bottom row, far right. Middle row has handsome Alan Robinson, lovely Sylvia Crawford, 5th from left Karla Lofgren (in the gawky pre-puberty stage!) of course standing next to everyone's ideal of beauty- Sandra Sturdivant, from the class of '59, then Carolyn (Cherry) Hudson. You may remember her, although she moved to Spring Branch and did not graduate with us.
Now we've had a scout troop picture and a couple of piano group pictures. How about sending in some photos of other "out of school" experiences to help us reminisce?
While other 1960 Buffs are evident in the background, the featured performers are, left to right: Calvin Blackman (Doris Lentz was his partner, but unfortunately was not seen in this photo); Shelia Steele and Ronny Dumesnil; Liz Russ and Larry Bass; Judy Kennedy and Paul Temple. OLE!!!
Ronny Dumesnil belts out the lead vocal (the name of the song escapes me!) while Sonny Jones on guitar and Larry Bass on drums provide a mean accompaniment. Looks like Betty Bobb provides a little maraca rhythm as well. Others seem to be clappin', hootin', and a'hollerin' to the beat as all join in the fun!!!
Can anyone remember the theme/name of this dance? Or why we had the patches sewn on our clothes? How often did we have these after school dances in the cafeteria in junior high? Details needed.
Laura McNeil Burns suggested "I'm guessing that was a Sadie Hawkins dance with patches for Dogpatch, but I am not sure."
That prompted a Google of the topic and found this: "Sadie Hawkins Day was a day-long event in Al Capp's comic strip "Li'l Abner" observed in the United States on the Saturday that follows November 9, named after Sadie Hawkins, 'the homeliest gal in all them hills'. Each year on Sadie Hawkins Day, the unmarried women of Dogpatch pursued the single men. If a woman caught a man and dragged him back to the starting line by sundown, he had to marry her". So, that question is answered (thanks, Laura!!!). How about the other questions posed in this caption?
Left to Right: (first names only on the back of the picture) Carole Sue Walker, Merle Montgomery, Nelda Julian, Jo Ann Peters, Kay Russell, Karla Lofgren, Walter (Skip) Wainwright, Buddy ? , Billy Denning, Gale ? , Clyde (Sonny) Jones, Fred McClurg (Any help with missing last names will be appreciated).
OK, do any of you remember this? Have one of these? I wonder what happened to my memory book? I wonder what happened to my MEMORY?!?!?!?!?!
John sent his Deady Memory book (from 9th grade year) for me to enter into the blog - a true BLAST FROM THE PAST!!! Check out those full skirts with the layers of crinoline petticoats that Laura mentioned. And if you look real closely, you might see a sequined bobble or two!!! Karla
Here's an idea - you write the captions for the pictures in this Deady Memory Album. The title is on the picture page, but I am sure you can add some witty dialogue. Look through the Deady Memory Book pages and select one or a few of special interest to you. Identify the picture and submit the caption as a comment on the Photo Album post. I can then cut and paste it under the appropriate photo.
Do you find yourself here? Let me know and I'll add your identification. KD
Thurburn Barker writes: "In the Deady Library Assistants, I'm on the top row, 1st on the left. I believe that John Hammerle is standing next to me."
Top: Judy Kennedy
Middle: JoAnn Peters, Pam Thomas
Bottom: ??? , Clyde (Sonny) Jones, Joe Sunbarger
Please supply the name of the guy bottom left - just can't put a name to that face!
Asked and answered! It's Donald Veazey (see his comment in the Photo Album post section.)
On 01/23/08, Charles Simmons sent this photo with the following message, "Yesterday, while rummaging through some of Mom’s photos, I found this old photograph of what I believe to be the 1955-56 Deady Jr. High Band. Many faces are identifiable – some have passed away. This photo is notable in that it was the first picture of the band in the newly air conditioned band room (window units can be seen). This was the year that our group was in the eighth grade."
